Pilates
| Pilates – Strength Through Movement Yes, Madonna uses it to strengthen her diaphragm, and Beverly Hills housewives have found, to their great delight, that it quickly turns their bottoms into cherry bombs. But what are Olympic athletes, professional triathletes, kayakers and long distance runners doing in a Pilates studio? They’re seeking the competitive edge that comes from this 80 year old stretching discipline, developed by Joseph Pilates. With over 500 exercises, designed to build balanced strength and a rock solid core, Pilates stretches are active and the focus is on pulling the abdominals inward to support the spine. Ten years ago, mainly dancers or injured athletes practiced this esoteric exercise method for rehabilitation, but Pilates now claims an estimated 5 million devotees. Our studio offers mat work, Reformer, Cadillac and the Chair equipment. If you are new to Pilates at Total Balance, a three class Introduction package must be taken. Pilates requires precise movements and our method is unique to Total Balance. The Introduction is required to maintain the integrity of our group classes and ensure injury or excessive strain is avoided. There are two ways to do the introduction: Group Introduction Precision Pilates is our introduction series done in a group setting. The curriculum is presented in three classes that run once weekly for three consecutive weeks. Groups are kept small with a maximum of 10 people. Precision Pilates is right for you if you do not require extensive one-on-one attention and enjoy the dynamic exchange of a group environment. Private/Semi-Private Introduction Work one-on-one with a senior instructor to receive personal attention. Private/semi-private instruction is right for you if you have specific concerns regarding a previous strain or injury that requires modified exercises or you simply prefer workout environment restricted to yourself or a small group of your family and friends. Call us or contact us by email to set up an appointment . Once you have completed your Introduction you are welcome to join any of the group Pilates classes on our schedule or take private/semi-private classes. The studio offers Pilates Certification Courses for students who are familiar with the art.
