Philip Monachino received his degree in massage therapy with practical and theoretical training. Phil understands that it is important to provide excellent hands-on massage therapy treatments and to educate the public on therapeutic wellness. When the therapist and client can work together to build a treatment plan, the effects felt will be most beneficial. Working in a massage environment that provides excellent patient care is of the utmost importance to Phil and he was extremely pleased when he was employed at Total Balance, an establishment that offers first-rate patient care daily.

Phil is qualified in Swedish massage, remedial exercise stretching, joint play techniques, trigger point therapy, and hydrotherapy and has attended the 2008 Terry Fox Run in Burlington and the 2008 Regatta in St. Catharines, performing massages on the participating athletes.

Lily has been helping out at the front desk of Total Balance whenever needed since its opening in May 2000. She has been welcoming people and scheduling appointments on a regular basis since 2006. Her voice is the one you hear if you happen to phone in on a Tuesday or Thursday between 9 am and 1 pm.

Lily is happy and very grateful to be part of the Total Balance team. She not only has met so many wonderful people over the years, but has learned so much about the body and how to help it become “totally balanced”.

By the way, for those who don’t know, Lily is Paul’s mother and claims she taught him everything he knows. No she has not climbed any mountains…yet, but has climbed the CN Tower twice!

It all started in May 2000 when Paul and Christine decided to join their knowledge and expertise and start a fitness and wellness center. Total Balance was born!

The private Pilates equipment was in the hallway in place of the office, the 11 spin bikes were in the main studio and had to be moved between classes to make space for the Pilates group. Paul had to mop the floor after each class and Christine wiped away the finger marks on the mirrors.

Since then, the space has expanded, the number of bikes has more than doubled, the equipment has multiplied and so has the number of clients. What has remained the same is the spirit of the place and dedication of the owners.

Happy 9th Birthday Total Balance.

And thank you for being a part of our success.

Kim has been the Office Director at Total Balance since late 2007. She keeps everything running smoothly, assisting Christine and Paul. She came to us with 10 years experience in advertising and marketing, on both the agency side and the client side. She loves the variety of her responsibilities, especially her time with the Total Balance family.

Kim was raised in Oakville, spent four years in Vancouver, and then lived in Dallas and other US cities for nine years before returning to Oakville. After all that moving around, she says it’s great to be home in Oakville most of the time, winters excepted.

Besides the front desk, you can often find her in Spinning and Pilates classes. A perk of working at Total Balance, Kim says, is getting into shape.

Mark McAllister has been a practicing massage therapist since 2007. He graduated from Lambton College in Sarnia with honours, and since then he has worked in multidisciplinary clinics in Port Elgin and Bolton.

The challenge of aiding in the recovery of MVA victims and others suffering from a wide variety of injuries and musculoskeletal conditions led Mark to become a RMT. Mark is a firm believer that massage therapy can help almost everybody in one form or another. Whether it’s preparing for an upcoming sporting event, helping alleviate back and neck pain, or simply easing everyday stress, massage can help.

Mark is excited to be in Oakville as part of the Total Balance team and is looking forward to meeting all of you.

Maria has a passion for movement, and her career purpose is to pass her knowledge and drive for healthy movement to others. Her understanding of movement has matured with her practice of yoga and pilates as a method of self observation, a way of seeing how her body can strengthen and become more efficient. This has led to her studying bodies and each person’s individual movements.

Maria is fascinated by how a person walks, their personal alignments and helping release the potential that can be can be blocked by a misalignment or repetitive stress injuries caused by poor posture while typing or lack of proper breathing!

It has taken Maria years to discover and pursue this path, and she believes that it is truly her path in life.

Marc has been working at Total Balance for almost two years and not only enjoys working here, but is happy to be a support to the community of Oakville. Marc started his initial medical and osteopathic education and training in France. He eventually moved to England where he completed his osteopathic training at the European School of Osteopathy (ESO), earning his B.Sc. (Hons) Ost. DO(UK) from the ESO and University of Wales. Marc is a member of the General Osteopathic Council (GOSC) in the UK and the Ontario Association of Osteopaths (OAO). While he is enjoying his current varied experiences in osteopathic practice, his main interest is in obstetric and paediatric practice and the treatment of functional chronic pain.

Marc is a deeply dedicated and passionate osteopath. He considers osteopathy not only a profession, but also a path, an integral part of his life. He is continually attending courses and conferences, furthering his interests and skills, and finds that being an osteopath is a very fulfilling profession and life. Marc is excited to be part of the growth of this profession in Canada, one of the only developed countries where osteopathy is still a rare and relatively unknown field.

JANA (pronounced “Yanna”) BUTLER has been a spinning instructor for 8 years. She holds three cycling certifications, including: Johnny G Spinning, Les Mills RPM, and Keiser Power Cycling.

I guess you could call Jana a spinning “fanatic”. Jana took up spinning after 10 years of running which had led to chronic knee and lower back pains. “Spinning was the first exercise that I found which seemed to duplicate the intensity and benefits of running —but without the high impact to my joints.” Jana moved to Oakville from Seattle, Washington last year, with her husband and two daughters, and really enjoys Canadian winters. Jana’s other passions (besides spinning) are music, travel, the outdoors, the ocean, nutrition, hiking and red wine.

What does Jana want every one to know about spinning?

ANYONE can spin. Any age, gender, weight or fitness level. All you have to do is sit on the bike and turn your legs in circles.

It’s a wonderfully intense short workout with the best cardio I’ve ever found!

Yes, I play loud and motivating music (if it’s too loud…just ask me to turn it down!) and night classes are in the dark (with a small spotlight on the instructor bike) while you listen to my voice guiding you on your “journey”.

Riders of all ages can participate (I’ve taught to men and women from ages 16 to 60+!).

The low-impact nature of spinning means: No foot pain, no knee pain —it’s easy to work hard!

You’ll build your cardiovascular capacity, strength, flexibility and lifelong fitness.

A spinning class burns from 600 to 800 calories.

Spinning classes allow individuals to go at their own pace (you control your bike resistance and speed!).

Spinning is user-friendly, especially for those who have a hard time with choreography.

PLEASE ask me about proper bike setup. That is what I’m here for. Proper bike setup will help you avoid potential injuries.

Whether you want to lose weight, tone up, improve your cardio or just have fun while you work out, spinning is the answer for you. Give it a try!

Have you ever been at Total Balance and wondered what that incense-like smell is? It’s “moxibustion” – a treatment that is mainly used to relieve pain and inflammation. It involves a herb called mugwort that is typically burned in small cones, on top of a protective medium on the skin. These cones, resembling a grain of rice, are lit with an incense stick and the small red ember burns down until it reaches the medium on which it is burned. Several cones may be burned on one point depending on the patient’s condition.

Points on the body that may be chosen are usually central points of pain, muscle tension or inflammation. Moxibustion is often used for nerve pain, muscle spasm, internal organ or muscle weakness and joint stiffness. In most cases relief is instant as the heat penetrates the area, although the effects of this treatment can last for up to 7 days.

Moxibustion is common to traditional Oriental medicine and is often used in conjunction with an acupuncture or shiatsu treatment.
